Every model portfolio that ends in magazine covers starts with four plain photographs on a phone. This is the honest order of the steps in between.
New faces often think the portfolio comes first — that you need pictures to be signed. It is the other way round. A legitimate modelling agency signs from digitals: a headshot, a full-length, a profile, all natural light and no make-up. What an agency reads in those frames is bone structure and proportion, which no portfolio can fake.
A new fashion model's book gets built through test shoots — unpaid or low-paid collaborations with photographers who also need the pictures. Two or three good tests produce a working book: one clean beauty frame, one strong full-length, movement, and something editorial with real styling. Quality beats volume; a book of eight excellent frames out-books a book of thirty average ones every time.
Never pay an agency to join, to be "considered", or for a portfolio as a condition of representation — a real model agency in the UK earns commission on the work it books for you, and nothing else. If an agency's money comes from you rather than from clients, walk away. (Our scam warning page covers this in full.)
FACES develops new faces properly — test shoots, digitals, the unglamorous groundwork — before anyone goes in front of a client who matters. No experience, no portfolio and no fee, ever: four honest phone pictures through the get scouted page is the whole application, from anywhere across London, Surrey, Hertfordshire, Essex, Kent, Manchester, the North East and the wider UK. Digitals read the same in every skin tone — Black, Asian, mixed-race and every heritage on the spectrum — which is exactly why agencies trust them over polished portfolios.
